Stash Report Week 21

Hello,

It's been a crazy week here trying to get ready to move some of my grandma's furniture into our full, little house.  I am really in "purge mode" atm, ready to rid our lives of all the extra stuff hanging around.  That means that I have less and less time to spend on the computer, so it may be quiet here for the next month or so.


Here are my unchanged numbers, wondering when I will ever sew again this summer:

A Beautiful Day (stash report week 20)

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers in blogland!


I am getting ready to go back to Indiana to do some more cleaning out at my grandma's house.  Uggh - each trip gets a little harder.  It's like renewing the grief and loss all over again.  It takes about two days back at home to recover my balance again. 


There are several boxes sitting in our house filled with Grandma's sewing stuff, quilt blocks, and glassware that I haven't looked at since packing them.  I have to put them away some day.  Of course, they have to have a place to be put away first!  So, when I'm done cleaning out Grandma's house, I need to clean out my own house!

Here is one of the quilts I always liked.  Grandma did not make this, her mother-in-law made it.  It's twin size. This pic is sideways.  

For some reason my grandma insisted on folding it over the back of one of her living room chairs for the past 20 years or so.  Amazingly, there no tears but it is very worn, and soft.  It is soiled where people sat back against it over the years.  I have some quilt soak to clean it.

Then there are 45 of these Scrap Bag Bouquet blocks.  Grandma definitely pieced these.  Green was one of her favorite colors. There's leftover fabric from the  scrap squares in what I brought home and have cut for the Fading Charms quilt.

Found the pattern in a drawer after finding the blocks so I could put them together!  They will have to be pressed and starched and squared up for a someday project.


One evening this week my quilty friends got together to work on cutting squares for our Fading Charms quilts.  Since we need about 850 squares, I will have to add some fabric to grandma's to get some more variety, but I can't wait to start the mindless chain piecing.

Monday I came down with a cold which kept me down til yesterday, which I spent doing lots of catch-up yard work (which means I slept very well).   I added more flowers to my hexie flower garden while resting this week, however.  


Monday was my birthday.  And today I get to travel about 235 miles alone with DS and our dog, Ruby.  Hhhmmm.... that massage gift certificate that DH gave me will be used when I get back next week.


My numbers have not changed, but it's not for lack of looking at all the internet sales!

DS enjoying time with Peter Pan

Thank you to all who entered!  We just returned from our Disneyland vacation late Friday night, thanks to American Airlines delays in Chicago, so I did not get to reply to everyone's comment as I usually do. 








Yesterday was a recovery day.  It's been a long time since we had a vacation with so much "go-go-go" as this one had. Even Ruby was pooped out from her "doggy vacation" at the kennel.  Only DS seemed to have any energy, as long we stayed inside, that is.

You see, while in southern California we didn't even wear our shorts as there was a "marine layer" that keep the temps below normal, below 70 most days.  Then, when we landed in St. Louis Friday night at 11PM, it was still 80 degrees!  80 degrees?!  Arghh - that's August weather, not May weather!  DS and his team mates almost melted at their 11:30AM T-Ball game yesterday morning.  It was 88 degrees and sticky.

I did not get to M&L Fabrics that is near Knott's Berry Farm, so I did not add any fabric to my totals this week.  I did get in a bit of hexie sewing while sitting on the planes and in the rental car.

To get these flowers together I need quite a few neutral hexies so I did lots of basting and then added them and some flowers to my garden.  It seems that if I keep placing flowers in the garden, then I can reclaim my paper pieces rather than ordering more.  I probably fuss too much about which flower goes where but adding them gets faster and faster.

Oh - and those straw/milliners needles that I won from Tonya are awesome!! Threading them can be challenging and I quickly discovered that, while traveling, several needles need to be threaded while stationary to avoid trying to do it in a moving vehicle.  


With the #9 sharps that I was using, occasionally I had to get out my thimble because the needle would not go through the four layers of fabric without some force when putting my flowers together.  The straw needles glide through the fabric.   When I baste, I do not sew through the papers, so the straw needles are now my needles of choice - thanks, Tonya!

Stash Report Week 18 - 200th post celebration

This week has not been a very productive one. It took me about 3 days to  recover from spending 5 days out of town, with DS in tow, cleaning out my grandma's house.  After almost 50 years, there's a lot of drawers to empty.  I'm not done yet but at least DH will go with me next time.  

Yesterday I finished my messenger bag with an inset zipper so I can carry it on vacation. The stripe fabric came from Grandma's and the polka dot came from the estate sale where my mom bought tons of fabric.  I used directions in The Bag Making Bible by Lisa Lam to add a zipper.  It's not perfect but I can't wait to carry it.  It went together really easily.

I mailed hexies to my Inchy Hexagon Swap partner.

And, I received some, too.  Aren't they pretty?!

These are some others that I made.  I have bunches of squares packed for our trip.

When I got home Monday afternoon, there was an email from Tonya telling me I had won a pack of milliner/straw needles on her blog, Hillbilly Handiworks.  They arrived this week, along with a pretty little fat quarter that could make some interesting hexies, depending upon how it's cut.


The needles are wonderfully slender and slide so easily through the fabric.  However, they have the tiniest eyes I ever seen.  My needle threader barely went through the eye!  Gotta use some thin thread with these.  I'll use them more while on vacation and see how well I like them after doing a few hexies!

I finally counted the rest of the fabric from my grandma's house.  There's about 10 yards here. The pieces on the left are the biggest.  The Christmas print is about 54" wide.  If it doesn't go on the back of a quilt, it may become a table cloth.

I'm overdue for a giveaway.  It was my 200th post about 8 posts ago.  This embroidery pattern caught my eye as soon as I saw it and it seems quite appropriate for stash report Sunday, so I bought one to share.

One Flower Wednesday

Wow!  I have some flowers to show on a Wednesday.  I made these while I was in Indiana this past weekend and finished one up last night.

Now to get more neutral squares cut so I can make some stepping stones while we're traveling next week.


Today I posted my hexies for the Inchy Hexagon Flower Swap. 

I was thinking about leaving the swap.  I've sent 8 hexies in 4 months of 2012 and until today, had only received 2 in return.  Susan's package gave me a little boost, and hope, that maybe my past partners would eventually keep their commitment.

Stash report week 17

This is a quicky and it may not work since I haven't been successful using Blogger's schedule feature.

I'm at the public library in the small town where my grandma lived.  They added onto the original Carnegie library, after they built a new jail - must get the priorities right huh?, and it's great!  DS is enjoying the children's section and since there's not so many children, he can play games for more than 30 minutes.

I haven't used any fabric this week except to make some hexies for my swap partner and for my own garden.  And, I haven't counted any more that I brought from Grandmas house, so my report is unchanged from last week.
